I’m sure you heard that phrase when you first entered into sales. It’s a staple in ‘sales training’ or at least from those who think they’re providing insight about what makes a salesperson successful. And while the phrase has truth to it, it’s incomplete.

After being in the sales world for 25+ years, 11 of those as a sales trainer, it’s clear to me that people buy from people they like whom they TRUST and provide VALUE.

Being likable you could argue is table stakes in today’s economy and you could just as easily argue it’s irrelevant in today’s environment when we can get most things with the click of a button. Either way, if you’re in sales and the other person doesn’t trust you to take care of them and provide value in the form of your solution, you’re not going anywhere fast.
